The Northeast 'A' League (NEA) consists of a number of schools participating
in the 1A classification outlined by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA). These schools range in enrollment from 200+/- students to 500+/- per school and are located in District 7 (as seen in the Washington map). All NEA schools are located in Northeast Washington, giving the league its name: "Northeast A League". Members of the NEA have varied during its history. Members are contingent on WIAA's classification and league determinations throughout the state. These classifications are adjusted based on school enrollments and general geographic locations.
Schools who are currently members of the NEA are: Chewelah, Freeman, Kettle Falls, Lakeside (9 Mile), Medical Lake, Newport and Riverside. These classifications are re-evaluated and modified every two years. The WIAA has made its final determination for the 2010-2012 school years. The league will make several adjustments in the upcoming year. League participants are likely to change every two years. This process can be followed on the WIAA's web site.
All participating schools are regulated by the WIAA and the guidelines set forth by the league. The league guidelines can be viewed and downloaded in the section on this web site entitled, 'NEA Handbook'
. This handbook changes annually, so keep watching for rule changes and sport scheduling (playoff) guidelines.
